Shoddy and Mungo

West Yorkshire was once the sustainability capital of the textiles world... mills in Morley, Dewsbury and Batley specialised in the production of shoddy and mungo... the best words I’ve learned this week... they are the scraps and poor quality yarns that were shredded and re-made into useful yarn. ⠀

The best of the recycled cloth could then be used for cheap clothing, blankets and uniform for the military. Less good could be used as stuffing in bedding and furniture. Finally, the seemingly useless rags were left to rot and sold to farmers as fertilisers. ⠀

Literally, not one scrap of cloth went to waste.
